Pirelli Calendar - Breast Plate - 1973 , signed limited edition print by Brian Duffy

Duffy was one of the few photographers who was commissioned for three Pirelli calendars. His first two calendars were in 1965 and 1973 and his last shoot for Pirelli was also in 1973 for the Cinturato truck tyre calendar. Duffy worked with the pop artist Allen Jones and the airbrush artist Philip Castle. The airbrushing techniques used producing this calendar were incorporated on the David Bowie Aladdin Sane album cover in 1973. The 1973 Calendar included the models: Nicky Allen, Kari Ann, Erica Creer, Elizabeth, Kate Howard, Nicki Howorth, Kubi, Jane lumb, Sue Paul, Penny Steele, Vida and Vicky Wilks.

I call this shot "The Prophet" because that's what I thought he looked like when I was shooting.

Photographer notes: The ‘Nightclubbing’ LP had just come out and ‘Pull Up To The Bumper’ was being played on every dance floor. The show started with band members arriving onstage sequentially wearing Grace Jones masks. The crowd cheered every one of them, each time believing Grace had arrived.  The quintessential disco diva finally appeared – dressed as a gorilla. She quickly changed into a masculine sharp suit, then a bronze Issey Miyake Plexiglas bustier that fitted like a second skin. Everyone was spellbound. This was one of the most memorable shows I have been to – dance rhythms mixed with a heavy reggae backing and Grace even played the accordion on one song ‘I've Seen That Face Before’. She was wonderful. At the end of the two-hour set, she was overwhelmed with bouquets. She left the stage by scaling the PA stack and acrobatically climbing up into one of the private boxes.

The contact sheet revealed the Scottie Dog walking in during a meeting regarding the “Scary Monsters” photo shoot and sitting in the chair next to David. The location and story behind the image is pieced together with very limited information adding to the mystery and intrigue of the picture.

It has become a firm fan favorite and the most popular of the behind the scenes images shot by Duffy.

I flew from London to shoot at Mike D’s backyard and around G-Son Studios, their recording studio in Atwater Village that was complete with basketball court and half-pipe and the offices of Grand Royal. The shoot was the day after they had made the iconic “Sabotage” video and props and fake moustaches were lying around the office. They messed around with golf clubs and various gardening props that were around the place. It was spontaneous and silly, but worked out great.”

Date: October 1990

Photographer’s notes: I had to meet the band and their PR Anton Brooks at The Dalmacia Hotel in Shepherds Bush, West London. It was really a bed and breakfast and they were staying in the basement. I dragged them outside but it was freezing so the session was quickly drawn to an end but not before I walked up and down the road looking for locations. I finally settled on a zebra crossing and a launderette. I managed to get a few solo shots before they darted back into their room to get warm. Other photographers that day had to shoot them inside.

“This was one of my early shoots for Dazed and Confused magazine. I worked with them a lot in the late 90’s and got some fantastic commissions..All unpaid! You did it for love and experience to get you to the next stage.

I remember being sent to the infamous band hotel “The Columbia” in Lancaster gate London. This was in April of 1998 if i recall and it would have been one of their early trips to London. It was certainly the first time Dazed had featured them.

When i turned up they were waiting outside for me with their PR Jacob who i knew, looking like many other new bands but had a real fun side to them. Julian however was working the Rock and roll vibe. Its a great energy to be around when you meet young fired up bands like this for me. Their room was not something you would imagine in this part of London but worked perfectly for the shoot. So we shot a little out side and the rest in this dodgy room. As you can see from the body language the guys were engaged in having a bit of fun..I used an old Pentax 6x7 camera for this shoot and on the legs image shot it blind from on top of a wardrobe. I have alway loved this image and it was actually one of the images the magazine used.”

We just went with the flow. She was really entertaining: funny, smart and cooly indiscreet. I am a huge jazz fan and I remember we talked about music, London and New York.”
