Roky Erickson

Roky Erickson was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known as a pioneer of psychedelic rock. As the frontman of the 13th Floor Elevators, he helped define the genre in the 1960s with mind-expanding songs like “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” Blending raw garage energy with surreal, cosmic lyricism, Erickson’s music captured both brilliance and madness in equal measure. Despite years of personal and mental health struggles, his haunting voice and visionary songwriting made him a cult icon, revered as one of rock’s most original and otherworldly figures.

Gibby, Willie, and Roky. May 1995, Luck, Texas.

“I could tell a thousand stories about making this image. First, Roky wouldn't move or take direction, literally. He would turn, but not move...Then, Willie quietly asked us who Roky Erickson was. Later, Roky asked if Willie Nelson was there yet, while standing next to him, Gibby Haynes was, well, Gibby. Willie is good for maybe 2 willing cooperative minutes before he's on to the next thing. I wasted 5 minutes trying to get Roky to move and Willie announced my five minutes were up! I dropped trying to get Roky to do anything other than just stand and chat ("how do I look now?"), and managed to get off two very quick rolls of 120 film with the Hasselblad; the actual shooting took 2 minutes... It's amazing that I was able to get this wonderful image.” - Scott Newton

Photographers Notes: Roky Erickson. Austin Opry House 1977. I've known Roky since 1972. I don't have room here to discuss all that should be said about him. He's been called the father of psychedelic rock, and punk rock. His first real band, The 13th Floor Elevators, changed the arc of music everywhere with their influential albums from 1965, especially "Easter Everywhere".  Roky had, and still largely has the most amazing voice. Perfect for rock music. If it wasn't for the mental issues he's dealt with since his exposure to the medieval methods employed to treat mental illness in the late '60s, (shock treatments, etc) who knows how different his career might have been. In any case, the folks in Austin love and respect him. Here, he's looking pretty good. He is a genius, no doubt.

Photographers Notes: Roky Erickson. early 1974 or late 1973. He was at a party in Clarksville, an old freed-slave community which has now been absorbed by Austin. But, at the time, a very old (80+) black man named Uncle Seymore, the son of a freed slave who had built the house Unk still lived in, loved the hippies who would come party and play at his house and they loved him back... This is one of my favorite Roky images, made when he was young and absolutely brilliant.
