Photographer notes: Still Life: The Band's horn section detail. Sunday Break II, Austin, TX 1976. One of my favorite detail shots, ever. I always try to find details I can isolate that tell the story in another way

Photographer notes: The Band. 1976 Austin, TX. I'll never forget watching them start to play their first song. They all started moving together, together and individually, in a jerky sort-of-synchronized fashion, as if they were parts of the same invisible dancer, as if they were parts of the same Whole thing. It was an epiphany to me: that there was a greater, more complete thing making the music and they were individual instruments, literally. I never forgot the lesson. Whenever I shoot a band I try to see "the whole elephant". That's where the good shots are.

Photographer notes: The Band coming offstage. Sunday Break II, Austin, TX. 1976. When photographing musicians I usually prefer to shoot them performing, with the Muse running through them. Sometimes, however, they are just so cool as people that their off moments are just as revealing. This would be one of those times. These guys had "cool" just dripping off 'em. They were the real deal.
