The Cramps by photographer David Corio, Bedford College, London 1979

Photographers notes:  Regrets? I’ve had a few and this was one of mine. This was the first London show for the original US psychobilly band. There had been a lot of hype over their mix of punk and rockabilly and the show was one of those packed events with a buzz of high expectation.

The band looked good but after staying for most of the set, I left. I really couldn’t stand their music. When I dropped the prints off at NME the next day I got such a bollocking from the photo editor. He couldn’t believe I’d not been there during the encore when lead singer Lux Interior had dropped his trousers and waggled his arse at the crowd. Not a glorious night.

Signed limited edition print of The Cramps by photographer, Simon Fowler in 1979.

Simon recalls - “Shot this at LFI’s Studio. I say Studio, that’s being generous, I was not, it was a room 8ft high sealing, plastic tiled floor and about 14ft square. Just about enough room for a back drop to hang from. There was a little make up area with a mirror normally for any female artist or anybody doing their hair boy or girl!

When the band came in they were quite subdued. Not many words were spoken just nods mostly. It felt a bit weird. I was only given about a couple of hours with them. Set the first shot up and in they step. Well, they then came alive. They were great to work with. They became more chatty and animated as the minuets ticked by. They all went out very happy bunnies. They used one of the images for Fever single cover which I was well chuffed about!”

Available in different sizes, framed or unframed.
