The Argus C3 is one of the great democratising cameras of the twentieth century: affordable, durable and instantly recognisable with its brick-like body and exposed gear train. Introduced in 1939 and produced for decades, it brought 35mm photography within reach of an enormous American audience while still offering interchangeable lenses and coupled rangefinder focusing. Its straightforward engineering and sturdy bakelite-and-metal construction gave it a practical honesty that now reads as unmistakably iconic. The C3 was used by generations of American enthusiasts, students and travelling photographers, but it also appears in the hands of more visible figures — most famously Tony Vaccaro, whose wartime and post-war work helped define a generation, and a long list of mid-century photojournalists who valued a dependable camera over prestige. Nicknamed 'The Brick,' the Argus C3 became one of the best-selling 35mm cameras in history, with well over two million units produced. It also slipped into American popular culture through films, family albums and roadside travel photography, making it less a specialist's instrument than a true national camera.
