The Leica R3 was Leitz's first electronic SLR — developed in close collaboration with Minolta and sharing key architecture with the Minolta XE-1, yet finished to Leica's own exacting standards and paired exclusively with the legendary Leica R lens line. Its angular silver-and-black body, prominent Leitz roundel and R3 ELECTRONIC engraving make it a key transitional camera in Leica's history, where Wetzlar precision met Japanese electronic engineering for the first time. Adopted by reportage, fashion and landscape photographers who wanted Leica optics with the convenience of aperture-priority automation, and used
widely across European editorial work in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The R3 marked the start of the Leitz–Minolta partnership that would shape the entire Leica R line, and is now valued by collectors as the genesis of Leica's modern electronic SLR era.
