TYPE 35mm SLR
The R4 represented Leica's most ambitious SLR — a multi-mode body offering programmed, aperture, shutter and manual exposure, all wrapped in a comparatively compact magnesium chassis. Its electronics were developed in partnership with Minolta, but every Leica R lens remained pure Solms glass. Favoured by reportage and landscape photographers who wanted Leica optics with the versatility of a modern SLR — including figures like Bruno Barbey. The R4's body design influenced the Minolta XD-11, often called one of the most beautifully engineered SLRs ever produced.
