"The first time I met Paul Newman was at the barren, deserted, Bonneville Salt Flats in 1974. I was there for an exclusive Sports Illustrated magazine assignment to cover Luigi 'Coco' Chinetti Jr's attempt to break some speed records driving a couple of aging Ferrari race cars, a 365GTB Daytona and a 512M prototype. Chinetti brought along Graham Hill, a two-time Grand Prix champion, Indy 500, and Le Mans winner, Milt Minter, a well-known underrated Can Am, Trans Am, IMSA and SCCA winner, and Paul Newman, recognized and well-regarded in racing circles as an amateur racer with numerous wins. Newman started racing when he was age 47 and went on to win four SCCA national championships in his 35-year racing career. But all of that would come later.
