The Contarex Electronic was Zeiss Ikon's final and most modern Contarex — a fully electronic shutter SLR paired with the same uncompromising Carl Zeiss optics that defined the line. Its restrained, almost architectural design replaced the famous 'bullseye' meter with a more contemporary silhouette, but every internal component still carried the precision of the original Contarex philosophy. It is one of the last great expressions of West German camera engineering before the industry tilted decisively towards Japan. Adopted by exacting professionals, scientific laboratories and serious collectors who wanted Zeiss glass on a modern, electronically timed body — a tool for those who treated the act of photographing as carefully as the act of seeing. The Contarex Electronic was produced in relatively small numbers before Zeiss Ikon withdrew from 35mm camera production altogether, making surviving examples increasingly sought after by collectors of post-war German design.
